A Pembroke man has been fined and banned from the roads for 18 months for drink-driving.

Samuel Fisher pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court this morning to driving while over the legal blood-alcohol limit in Devonshire on November 26.

The court heard that the 46-year-old was involved in a two-vehicle collision on North Shore Road at around 1.38am.

Police offers attended and while speaking to the defendant, observed that he smelled of alcohol, was unsteady on his feet and that his eyes were glazed.

Fisher was taken to Hamilton Police Station, where it was determined that he had 159 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood — the legal limit is 80mg.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo handed him a $1,200 fine and disqualified him from driving all vehicles for a year.

In a separate matter, Kyle Tucker, of Warwick, was fined $800 and banned from the roads for a year.

The 21-year-old admitted failing to provide a sample of breath on October 24.

Prosecutor Nicole Smith told the court that Tucker was spotted by a police officer exiting Terceira’s gas station in Smith’s at about 7.45pm.

He was observed heading west on North Shore Road on an auxiliary cycle at a speed exceeding 60km/h.

Tucker was stopped and the officer noted that his pupils were dilated and his face puffy.

He denied having had any alcohol at first but admitted smoking cannabis. However, he later told the officer that he had done both.

Tucker was taken to Hamilton Police Station, where he failed to give an adequate sample of breath.
