A man who led police on a chase through Devonshire has been banned from driving all vehicles for two years.

Nathan Lindo, 20, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court this morning to charges of driving dangerously and refusing a lawful request to provide a breath sample.

Both charges relate to an incident that took place in the early hours of December 16.

The court heard that at around 2.45am, officers were on mobile patrol on Montpellier Road approaching Middle Road when they saw Lindo travelling west along Middle Road at high speed.

The officers activated the vehicle’s lights and turned to follow the defendant, but Lindo performed a U-turn and sped past them in the opposite direction.

During the subsequent chase, officers noted other drivers taking evasive action and braking to avoid collisions with Lindo.

The chase concluded when Lindo lost control of his vehicle near Park View Lane and fell, suffering minor injuries.

Officers reported that when they spoke to the Devonshire resident after the chase he smelled strongly of intoxicants, his speech was incoherent and his eyes were glazed. They also stated that Lindo had refused to submit to a breath test.

The defendant was subsequently taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment, before being taken to the Hamilton Police Station for processing.

Appearing in court, Lindo apologised for his actions, saying: “I know I messed up. Please take mercy.”

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined Lindo $800 for refusing a breath test and $1,000 for driving dangerously. He further disqualified Lindo from driving all vehicles for a period of two years.
