A teenager who fled from police has been handed a 12-month conditional discharge.

Appearing in Magistrates’ Court this morning, Elisha Thomas pleaded guilty to escaping lawful custody on April 13.

The court heard that the 17-year-old was stopped by officers on North Shore Road, near the junction with Panorama Drive in Hamilton Parish.

Because he had outstanding warrants for his arrest, Thomas was placed in the back of the police vehicle.

However, he escaped from the car and ran onto the Railway Trail, with the officers eventually losing sight of him. They later attended Thomas’ home in Hamilton Parish and arrested him.

Defence counsel Ken Savoury put Thomas’ actions down to “youthful exuberance”, telling the court that Thomas was “obviously very young and very immature”.

Thomas also apologised, saying he had learnt “to be more responsible and to show up to court”.

Magistrate Tyrone Chin responded: “Even adults haven’t got that down yet.”

He handed Thomas a 12-month conditional discharge.

• Also in court, 33-year-old Delmari Scott was fined $300 after he admitted violently resisting arrest yesterday.

The court heard that officers had attended his Paget home because he was wanted in connection with a wilful damage offence.

A “violent” struggle ensured in the bathroom and living room but Scott was eventually subdued and arrested.
