A man admitted breaking into a former girlfriend’s home and destroying property which he said he bought during their relationship.

Kenneth Landy, 50, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court to a charge of trespassing in a home on Vesey Street, Devonshire, and causing unlawful damage.

The court heard that on April 18, Landy was at the property when he was delivered a warning letter, instructing him to leave. At that time, he reportedly said that he would leave, but only after he destroyed everything in the home he owned.

Landy left after tearing up the warning letter and, later in the day, the resident left the property, locking it up behind her.

When she returned, she discovered that the home had been broken into and numerous items inside had been damaged including the stove, a couch, a series of plant pots and a bed. Landy was later arrested and admitted being the one to cause the damage.

Addressing the court, Landy apologised saying that at the time of the incident he was angry, and he was not happy with his actions.

“The relationship was toxic,” he said. “I just couldn’t control my emotions, but I am happy to help her pay for the damages.

“It was my hard labour that paid for the items in the house. I couldn’t see her benefiting from the fruit of my labour when I’m not there.”

While the Crown estimated that the damage caused could exceed $5,000, magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo released Landy on $3,000 bail and adjourned sentencing so that the court could be provided proof of the extent of any financial loss.
