Man jailed for striking officer with stick

A man charged with assaulting a police officer during the December 2 protesters has been jailed for a year.
Edmund Smith, 52, was charged with assaulting Inspector Scott Devine outside the House of Assembly during the protests, allegedly striking the officer repeatedly in the legs with a wooden walking stick.
According to a police spokesman, Smith was convicted of the offence last week and sentenced to 12 months in prison by magistrate Archibald Warner.
