A Sandys senior who admitted swapping price tags at a grocery store was this morning given a six-month conditional discharge.

Beverly Hunt, 70, pleaded guilty to a count of dishonestly obtaining a $79 steak from the MarketPlace.

The court heard that on May 26, staff at the Shelly Bay MarketPlace noticed two loose price tags in the store’s meat section.

CCTV footage was reviewed, and showed Hunt removing the price tag from one package of meat and placing it on another. She then left the store after paying $20.24 for a steak that had been priced $79.82.

Hunt was later confronted when she returned to the store and readily admitted her actions, offering to pay for the steak.

Addressing Magistrates’ Court, Hunt said she had acted in an “insane moment” and was deeply remorseful for what she had done.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo noted her clean record, saying he did not expect the incident would be repeated.

“You were taken into custody. You were arrested,” he said. “I’m not going to convict you of this offence, but I am going to require you to pay the difference.”
