A Paget teenager has admitted possessing more than 15 grams of cannabis and 0.51g of cannabis resin.

Appearing in Magistrates’ Court this morning, Rory Stevens-Astwood pleaded guilty to having the drugs in St George’s on January 1.

The court heard that the 18-year-old was in a car that was pulled over during a traffic stop on Kindley Field Road. Officers smelled cannabis and searched the car.

A police dog alerted to Stevens-Astwood’s waistband and officers found two lots of plant material, weighing 14.39 grams and 0.94g, along with the cannabis resin.

Stevens-Astwood’s lawyer told the court that his client was “embarrassed and extremely apologetic”, and requested a conditional discharge.

However, magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo said: “A conditional discharge is not just like candy being given out. It’s a form of supervision that comes with responsibility.”

He questioned how Stevens-Astwood could be supervised if he returns to school in England in September, but was told that the Department of Court Services is able to supervise overseas.

Mr Tokunbo ordered a Social Inquiry Report, granted Stevens-Astwood $2,000 bail with a like surety and adjourned sentencing until September 14.
