A Paget woman was today sentenced to 12 months of probation for stealing more than $100 worth of beauty supplies from a Hamilton pharmacy.

Angela James, 45, was found guilty of the offence on August 16 after a trial in Magistrates’ Court.

She was sentenced today for stealing two boxes of facial pads, deep cleanse cream and two moisturisers valued at $112 from Woodbourne Chemist in Pembroke on March 13.

James had denied the offence when she appeared in court on May 12, along with co-defendant Albert Wilson, who pleaded guilty.

The court heard at that time that Wilson and James were seen in the store with a black shoulder bag.

Wilson was seen placing items into the bag before the pair walked out without paying.

They were later spotted by police. Officers searched the bag and found the stolen items.

In court today, James apologised for wasting the court’s time and said it would not happen again.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo said: “According to you, a thief is someone who takes something without paying for it.”

He added that James said she was just showing the pharmacy to Wilson.

Mr Tokunbo likened the case to a bank robbery where the getaway driver is just as guilty of robbery even if he never sets foot in the bank.

He added: “Your case is similar. You went into the pharmacy with Mr Wilson. You knew what Mr Wilson was doing.”

And he said that just because James did not place the items in the bag, this did not make her innocent.
