A 52-year-old Devonshire man was today fined $800 for driving a boat while impaired by alcohol.

Wyman Minx admitted the offence, which happened on June 26, when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court this morning.

The court heard that marine police were dispatched to Gibbet Island at around 8pm after receiving a report of a man in an unresponsive state on board a boat that had hit the island.

Officers found Minx lying on a bench by the boat, which was on the rocks and had been tied to a tree.

They approached him and he said: “Where am I? Why are you guys here?”

Minx was unsteady on his feet, smelled of alcohol and his eyes were glazed. Asked if he’d been drinking, he said: “I had a few beers.”

He was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for medical assessment.

A blood sample showed he had 164 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.
