A Devonshire man this morning admitted leading police on a chase through Hamilton.

Cavin Francis, 21, had denied the offence, but chose to reverse his plea after being told he would be remanded for repeatedly missing his trial date.

The court heard that on December 16, 2016, officers noticed Francis riding a motorcycle on One Way Deep Dale which matched the description of one sought in connection with another case.

The officers turned on their sirens but Francis refused to stop, riding through two red lights and repeatedly crossing the middle line as he led police on a chase through North Hamilton.

Francis later lost control of the bike while riding up a grass hill near Middletown Lane and slid out. He then abandoned the bike, escaping on foot.

Police looked up a picture of Francis, the vehicle’s registered owner, and found that he was the person they saw riding the bike.

Francis was charged with the offence last year and pled not guilty, claiming his motorcycle had been stolen and he was not the rider.

He was given three trial dates over the course of 2017, but each time failed to attend.

Appearing in Magistrates’ Court this morning, Francis again denied the charges.

However Francis changed his plea after magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo said he would be remanded into custody until his next trial date because of his repeated failure to come to court.

Francis pled guilty to failing to stop for police, dangerous driving and two counts of failing to stop at a stop sign.

Mr Tokunbo fined him a total of $1,350 for the various offences, banning him from driving all vehicles for two years.
