A just married couple from the United States were hit with $7,000 in fines yesterday after they were caught with cannabis.

Daniel Mansoor and Jordaniel Manjo, both 28, admitted that they imported 45.8 grams of cannabis and three cartridges of a crystalline form of the main ingredient of cannabis.

Magistrates’ Court heard the couple arrived on board cruise ship Anthem of the Seas on July 28.

The Michigan couple were stopped by customs officers as they left the ship and searched.

Officers found two hand-rolled cigarettes and the cartridges.

Mansoor told the officers he had a licence to have the drugs in the US for medical purposes and that the couple had additional cannabis in their cabin.

Manjo showed the court pictures of their medical marijuana licences after they admitted the offence.

She said: “We are very, very sorry. We didn’t mean to disrespect your country. We never meant to be any trouble.”

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo said the couple should not have assumed they would be allowed to bring the cannabis to Bermuda.

He added: “If you have medical clearance for using cannabis from one state in your country that doesn’t necessarily extend to where ever you go.”
