A Devonshire man who gave a false name to police was fined today for attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Kyree Burch, 26, was also fined and banned from the roads for 18 months for driving while impaired on Saturday.

The court heard that police stopped Burch on Elliot Street after they saw him riding a bike with a pillion passenger who was not wearing a helmet.

As the officers spoke to Burch they noticed that his breath smelled of alcohol and he was unsteady on his feet.

Burch told them he had a shot of Chivas minutes before he was stopped and added: “Come on, give me a break.”

He then gave officers a false name and date of birth. Police checks showed that no driver’s licence had been issued to someone with those details.

Officers then determined that his real name was Kyree Burch.

A breathalyser test at Hamilton Police Station also showed that he had 173 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood — more than twice the legal limit of 80mg.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined Burch $500 for attempting to pervert the course of justice and $1,200 for driving while impaired by alcohol.
