The law catches up with motorist

A man was banned from the roads and ordered to pay more than $4,000 for traffic offences as far back as 2014.

Senior magistrate Juan Wolffe told Burt Lambe, 64, that “for a person with no job, you sure do like to commit offences and not show up for court.”

Magistrates’ Court heard on Wednesday that Lambe was stopped at a roadside sobreity checkpoint on Crow Lane, Pembroke.

He admitted drinking and took a breath test at the side of the road, which he failed.

Officers took Lambe to Hamilton Police Station to take another test, but he refused to do so. The offence took place on December 7 last year.

The court also heard that Lambe had been charged with driving an unlicensed car and driving wihtout insurance on December 8, 2018.

He was supposed to appear in court on the charges on January 9 last year, but didn’t show up.

Lambe had also been charged with speeding at 61km/h in 2014, but failed to appear in court in August that same year.

He pleaded guilty on Wednesday to drink-driving, speeding, driving without third party insurance, and driving an unlicensed car.

Mr Wolffe said that Lambe, of no fixed abode, had an unpaid $250 fine for a separate offence he admitted to in 2014.

He ordered him to pay the fine before he left Magistrates’ Court.

Mr Wolffe also fined Lambe a total of $3,810 for the offence and banned him from the road for 18 months.

Lambe was ordered to pay the fines by June 1.
