Woman accused of $75,000 blackmail scheme

A woman appeared in Magistrates’ Court yesterday accused of a blackmail demand for $75,000 from a father and daughter.

Lu Zhao, 35, was charged with making an “unwarranted demand with menaces” to the man between May 19 and June 12.

She was also charged with making a demand for cash from his 36-year-old daughter on June 22.

The court heard that Ms Zhao, from Paget, was alleged to have asked for a total of $75,000 from the two, also from Paget, in exchange for not going to police to claim the father had assaulted her.

She was said in court to have been given $25,000 by the man, but did not get any money from his daughter.

Ms Zhao did not enter a plea as the case must be heard in the Supreme Court.

Senior magistrate Juan Wolffe adjourned the case until August 3 and released the defendant on $10,000 bail.

He also ordered her to hand over her passport and to have no contact with the alleged victims.
