Judge adds 18 months to drink-driver’s injury
A 26-year-old man who fractured his ankle in a late-night crash admitted to drink-driving last week.
David Thomas, from Devonshire, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court to a charge of driving while impaired.
The court heard that police were alerted to a crash on South Road in Paget, near the junction with Garden Drive just before midnight on July 11.
Thomas was travelling east along the road when he attempted to overtake another motorcycle.
But a third vehicle in the westbound lane caused Thomas to hit the bike he was overtaking and fall.
Emergency Medical Technicians attended, but he refused hospital treatment.
He admitted to police he had “about four beers” and agreed to provide a breath sample, which revealed he had 153 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood — almost double the legal limit of 80 milligrams.
The court heard the officers took Thomas to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital after he complained of pain in his ankle.
Doctors later confirmed that he had fractured his ankle.
Senior magistrate Juan Wolffe fined Thomas $1,000 and banned him from driving for 18 months.
