Driver goes for beer after crashing car

A man who went for a beer after he crashed his car into a wall was banned from the road for 18 months.

Floyd Burgess, 43, pleaded guilty to driving a car while over the legal alcohol limit and driving without a valid licence.

Magistrates’ Court heard that Burgess and a co-worker left the East End Mini Yacht Club at about 6.15pm on August 14 with Burgess behind the wheel of his co-worker’s car.

But he struck a perimeter wall on Convict Bay as he drove away.

He was seen by a Sea Cadet Commodore, who contacted police and said that Burgess appeared to have been drinking.

When police arrived at the scene, the commodore told them that Burgess, from St George’s, had walked back to the yacht club.

Burgess later returned to the site of the crash with a bottle of Carlsberg Elephant beer in his hand.

He denied that he had crashed into the wall, but admitted that he had been drink-driving.

A breath test showed he had 153.5 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood — almost double the legal limit of 80 milligrams.

The officers also discovered that Burgess did not have a valid driving licence.

Senior magistrate Juan Wolffe disqualified Burgess from driving for 18 months and fined him $1,000 for the drink-driving offence. He fined Burgess an additional $200 for driving without a licence.
