Visitor admits having bullet in backpack
A 59-year-old visitor who was caught with a bullet in his backpack as he returned to a cruise ship received an absolute discharge in Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
Victor Laczo, from Allentown, Pennsylvania, pleaded guilty to possessing a .22 calibre bullet on September 5.
According to Maria Sofianos, for the Crown, shortly before 4pm, security officers searched Laczo’s bag at King’s Wharf, Ireland Island North, as he was about to head back onto the Enchantment of the Seas when they found the bullet inside one of the bag’s compartments.
Laczo was arrested around 4.20pm and was taken to Hamilton Police Station, where he took part in a caution interview.
During the interview, he explained he did not know that the bullet was in his bag and was not sure how it got there.
He told officers that if he knew that the bullet was in his bag, he would not have brought it to Bermuda. He also told officers that he had a gun licence back in Pennsylvania.
Despite the Crown suggesting that Laczo receive a conditional discharge, magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo discharged his case without any conditions.
Laczo is the second visitor in a week to be discharged after being brought to Magistrates’ Court for possession of a single bullet.
