A witness said that shortly before a fatal shooting he had warned friends about seeing two people dressed in all black in the area.

The witness, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, told the court that he caught a brief glimpse of the two men as he left the Deepdale area of Pembroke on the evening of November 3, 2017.

“Two people dressed up in black? I felt there was something suspicious about it,” he told the Supreme Court yesterday.

He said he messaged a friend and warned him to keep his eyes open as he continued on his way home.

The court heard earlier that at about 9.40pm that night 30-year-old Morlan Steede was fatally shot in the Deepdale area.

Kiari Tucker, 25, of Warwick, has denied that he murdered Morlan Steede and using a firearm to commit the indictable offence.

The witness told the court that he had spent much of the afternoon and evening of the day of the shooting talking, playing cards and drinking with others near the corner of One Way Deepdale and Parson’s Road.

“There were a couple of guys down there,” he said. “It was a Friday evening. It wasn’t anything particular.”

He said that Mr Steede — who he knew as Clappa — was among those present at the corner that night, and that he had briefly seen Mr Tucker in the area.

Asked if Mr Tucker had come to the area to buy cannabis from him, the witness said: “He probably did get weed, but I don’t remember selling it to him.”

Later in the evening, at about 9pm or 10pm, the witness said he decided to leave and drive home.

As he drove away from the area, the witness said, he spotted two men in black on a motorcycle and became concerned.

The witness said that as a result of his fears he called one of the people at the corner through WhatsApp and told him what he had seen.

“I called him and told him I had seen two people all in black,” he said. “Keep your eyes open. That was it.”

The jury were also shown CCTV footage of Court Street recorded hours before the shooting.

Included on the footage was a man — identified by police as Mr Tucker — wearing a black hooded shirt and black track pants.

The Crown has alleged that Mr Tucker “scoped out” Mr Steede an hour before returning to the Deepdale area and fatally shooting him.

The trial continues.
