Man found with drugs valued at $60,000 jailed for 12 months

Magistrates' Court

A man who had drugs valued at more than $60,000 at his Pembroke home was sentenced yesterday to a year in prison.

Maxwell Smith, 54, pleaded guilty to possessing cocaine, a substance containing THC, cannabis and cannabis resin, as well as growing the drug, when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court last month.

He also admitted to laundering almost $40,000 in cash, after initially denying all charges.

The court heard yesterday, when Smith appeared for sentencing, that police found and seized the drugs and money when they searched his home in March 2022.

Prosecutor Nicole Smith said that drug supply and use was leading to the “erosion of the natural fibre in our community” and that the defendant was solely responsible for the offences.

Magistrate Tyrone Chin ordered that Smith complete one year’s probation after his prison sentence ends and that the stolen funds be forfeited.
