Prosecutors to review investigation on fatal explosion
Police have handed over findings into an explosion that claimed the lives of two people so that a decision can be made on whether there will be a prosecution in relation to the incident.
Investigators earlier this year completed inquiries into the blast at an apartment block on Hilltop Court in Southampton, which happened ten months ago.
A Bermuda Police Service spokesman said last week: “The matter is with the Department of Public Prosecutions for review.”
Cindy Clarke, the Director of Public Prosecutions, added: “I can advise that a file has been presented to our department for a decision to be made on whether a public prosecution should be commenced.”
Residents heard a “huge boom” when the explosion happened at about 8.50pm on May 2, 2022.
Oscar and Jove Mascarinas died and three other people were injured in the blast, which destroyed part of the apartment block.
Police said at the time that, although it was early in the investigation, it appeared the explosion was caused by a gas leak.
