Probation for knife thief
A man who stole kitchen knives from The MarketPlace has been sentenced to two years probation.
Charles Ebbin, 64, from Hamilton Parish, admitted to taking the items, valued at almost $75, when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court earlier this week.
Ebbin stole three knives from the Shelly Bay store last August, but was caught by a manager once outside the facility.
Suggesting a three-month prison sentence, prosecutor Paul Wilson yesterday reminded the court that the incident occurred during regular business hours and that Ebbin was solely responsible for the offence.
Patricia Harvey, Ebbin’s lawyer, highlighted that the knives were recovered shortly after they were taken and requested that her client, who is on probation for an unrelated matter, be sentenced to more probation.
As part of his new probation order, Ebbin is required to complete 500 hours of community service, refrain from drugs and alcohol and adhere to a 6pm to 6am curfew.
