Homeless man pleads guilty to stealing from workman’s club
A man who stole more than $2,000 from a members club has been referred to a court treatment programme.
Dwayne Hassan, 30, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to stealing the money from Hamilton Parish Workman’s Club, as well as prowling at a private residence in the same area, when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
The court heard that on March 5, Hassan trespassed on to and tried to open a window at a property on Winton Hill Lane before being questioned by resident Karen Trott.
Hassan told Ms Trott, who claimed to have known him for many years, that he was looking for her and needed her help.
The court was told that Hassan lived at the property a few years ago, but has not been allowed back since.
Days later, staff at the club noticed that money was missing from a safe and later saw Hassan in video footage taking the cash. He returned to the club four days later and stole more money.
Senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson ordered that Hassan participate in mental health treatment court beginning on April 20 and remanded him into custody.
