Fine and ban for motorbike rider who almost fell off vehicle

A Pembroke man was banned from the road this morning after he admitted drinking and driving.

Antonio Furtado, 47, plead guilty in Magistrates’ Court to a charge that he drove his motorbike along Serpentine Road while impaired on February 26.

The court heard that officers were carrying out roadside sobriety checks in the area at around 8.50pm when they spotted Furtado travelling west and signalled for him to stop.

When Furtado stopped for the officers, they noticed he appeared to stumble when he put his feet down and almost fell off the vehicle.

They also noted that he smelled of alcohol and his eyes were red and glazed.

Asked if he had been drinking, Furtado said that he had two beers.

After pleading guilty with the assistance of a translator, Furtado indicated to the court that he was interested in taking part in the DUI Court programme.

Magistrate Craig Attridge ordered a drug and alcohol assessment be carried out on Furtado and suspended him from driving all vehicles until a further court order before releasing him on $1,500 bail.
