Three admit to drink-driving, fined and banned from roads
Three men were banned from the road yesterday for drinking and driving offences.
Teutilo Aguire, 51, from Warwick, pleaded guilty to driving on Front Street while impaired in an incident on May 7.
The court heard that at about 3am that day, police officers in an unmarked vehicle near the junction with Parliament Street noticed the defendant on a motorcycle swerving over the centre line.
When Aguire stopped at a traffic light, the officers noticed that he appeared to be unsteady.
They followed Aguire and, when his driving did not improve, they pulled him over and noticed that his eyes were glazed and he smelt of alcohol.
He admitted to the officers that he had “two beers” and, asked why he was swerving, said: “It’s probably the two beers.”
Ilhan Gibbons, 20, from Sandys, also pleaded guilty to driving while impaired during yesterday’s Magistrates’ Court sitting.
The court heard that Gibbons was stopped by police at about 11.50pm on April 20 after he was flagged for speeding on South Road, near the junction with Brighton Hill in Devonshire.
As officers spoke with him, they noticed that his eyes were glazed and he smelt of alcohol.
Gibbons denied drinking, but was taken to Hamilton Police Station to provide a breath sample.
Once there, he refused to provide a sample, telling an officer: “I had two Coronas, and I’m not sure I will pass.”
Fernando Martin-Soares, 51, from Smith’s, admitted driving while above the legal blood-alcohol limit.
The court heard that he was stopped by police at about 1am on May 15 while driving on Reid Street in Hamilton.
He agreed to provide police with breath samples. The lowest reading was 248 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood, more than triple the legal limit of 80mg.
Senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson fined all three men $1,500 and disqualified them from driving all vehicles for 18 months.
