A man who was aggressive towards police was given a two-year conditional discharge when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Zachary Foley, 23, from Paget, admitted obstructing a reserve police inspector when he appeared in court last month.

The court heard that Foley was intoxicated and became aggressive towards officers while he was being arrested, telling them “f*** the police and f*** you”.

Both the prosecution and Aura Cassidy, Foley’s lawyer, suggested that he be sentenced to a 12-month conditional discharge.

Calling her client a “responsible and well-behaved young man”, Ms Cassidy told the court that his actions during the incident were “unusual for him”.

Foley apologised for his actions and told senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson she “won’t see that [behaviour from him] again”.

Ms Anderson acknowledged Foley’s remorse and that he was intoxicated at the time of the altercation, but said similar offences were increasing in the community.

She ordered that court services supervise him throughout the discharge period and warned him to stay out of trouble.
