Man given ‘time served’ for pitbull attack on another dog
A man whose pitbull attacked and killed another dog has been sentenced to time served in prison – almost one year after admitting the offence.
When he appeared in court last year, Clifton Williams, 68, from Pembroke, pleaded guilty to owning the dog, named Dora, who caused the death of another dog, Frankie, owned by Akhil Kapur, in December 2021. He also admitted to having Dora without a licence.
Senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson initially granted Williams a two-year conditional discharge in August, but ordered that he pay $7,340, the cost of a new dog and Frankie’s veterinary bill, to Mr Kapur.
However, Williams, who claimed to be caring for his mother and out of work for decades, was unable to pay and had to be resentenced as a result.
Ms Anderson remanded Williams into custody on June 7, until the court could reach an appropriate decision.
After speaking with Mr Kapur, prosecutor Paul Wilson suggested that Williams be sentenced to time already served behind bars when he reappeared in court yesterday.
