Man pleads guilty to having two blank 5.56mm rounds

A man who had two rounds of ammunition at his home will be sentenced in August.

Noel Van Putten, 29, admitted to having the blank 5.56mm rounds when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court. He had initially denied the charge.

The court heard that police found the ammunition at Van Putten’s St George’s home on September 27, 2022.

Van Putten’s lawyer, Charles Richardson, told the court that his client, a former member of the Royal Bermuda Regiment, used the rounds during regiment training, but had forgotten to turn them in when the exercise had finished.

Instead of suggesting prison time for the offence, prosecutor Alan Richards asked that a social inquiry report be written for Van Putten to determine the appropriate sentence.

Acting magistrate Kenlyn Swan adjourned the case to August 21 for sentencing and extended Van Putten’s $5,000 bail until that time.
