Applications invited for new Chief Justice
Applications have been invited for the position of Chief Justice, which will become available upon the retirement of Narinder Hargun this year.
An advertisement said the role came with a salary of about $234,000, plus allowances.
It explained that the post included leading the Supreme Court judicially and overseeing the deployment of judges as well as the allocation of work.
The successful applicant will also be expected to make sure that the judiciary has appropriate “administrative, infrastructural and technological support”.
They will represent the judiciary’s views as well as its administrative and legislative needs to the Government, the legal profession and the wider community.
The advertisement said: “A sound knowledge of all the main branches of the law is a minimum requirement.
“Specialist knowledge of at least one of the main branches of the law is highly desirable.
“Experience of the culture of Bermuda, its courts and legal system would be an advantage.
“Applicants will be expected to demonstrate the qualities of a modern professional judge and to promote the confidence of litigants and the public in the judiciary.”
It was announced last month that Mr Justice Hargun, who was appointed as Chief Justice in July 2018, will step down from the post at the end of the year.
A statement from Government House said then that Rena Lalgie, the Governor, instructed the Judicial and Legal Services Committee to begin the appointment process for a successor.
The job advertisement, published yesterday, said: “The selection process will recognise the importance of: selecting candidates solely on merit; selecting only people of good character; the need to encourage diversity in the persons considered for appointment.
“The statutory retirement age is 65 years but may be extended to 70 years with the consent of the Governor.
“The post becomes vacant on December 10, 2023.”
A closing date of August 25 was set for applications.
