Jury hears customs officers smelled cannabis in man’s luggage

Supreme Court

Prosecutors told a Supreme Court jury that more than $400,000 of drugs were discovered in a Southampton man’s luggage during a 2017 search.

Edward Jaloni Albouy, 29, has denied charges that he imported MDMA, also known as ecstasy, cannabis and cannabis resin into the island.

He also pleaded not guilty to charges of possessing the drugs with intent to supply.

As his trial began in the Supreme Court yesterday T'Deana Spencer, for the Crown, told the court that Mr Albouy was selected for a secondary inspection after he arrived in Bermuda on a September 3, 2017, flight from the UK.

She said that during the inspection of his suitcases, officers noticed a strong smell of cannabis coming from packages of diapers.

Ms Spencer said police were contacted after several packages wrapped in black tape were discovered.

Further inspections revealed almost 3kg of MDMA, worth as much as $230,000 if sold in the streets of Bermuda, along with more than 1kg of cannabis resin, worth up to $120,000, and more than 1.5kg of cannabis, worth up to $80,000.

Ms Spencer said that the prosecution will show that Mr Albouy knew, suspected or had reason to suspect the drugs were hidden within the luggage.

The trial continues.
