Dill jury sees video before and after alleged stabbing
A Supreme Court jury watched CCTV footage recorded moments before and after a fatal stabbing that cost a 22-year-old his life.
The footage showed two men jumping out of a car outside the Rubis Gas Station on South Road in Warwick and chasing Joshua Rowse, who was standing outside.
Less than a minute later, Mr Rowse is seen staggering back to the station clutching his side, leaving what appears to be a trail of blood behind him.
Davin Dill, 24, has denied charges that he murdered Mr Rowse and that he possessed a bladed article, specifically a knife, in a public place in an incident on June 14, 2020.
As the trial continued yesterday, Detective Constable Courtney Simmons showed the jury CCTV footage recorded at the Rubis petrol station on South Road in Warwick.
The first clip shown to the jury was recorded the day before the fatal stabbing and showed a man, whom the defence counsel acknowledged was the defendant, arrive in a black car and go into the store and leave a short time later.
The defendant had his left arm in a black sling in the recording but Ms Simmons told the court that the defendant appeared to use his left hand “quite a bit” while on camera.
The jury were subsequently shown footage from the afternoon of the stabbing.
Ms Simmons said she identified the victim arriving at the petrol station at around 7.09pm on a motorcycle with a pillion passenger.
Mr Rowse parked the motorcycle near the entrance to the store and stood by the entrance door with the pillion passenger, while two other men, who arrived on another motorcycle alongside them, both went into the store.
Shortly after they arrived, another motorcycle was seen on the footage pulling into the petrol station, turn around and pull back out.
At 7.13pm, the cameras showed a black car pulling into the petrol station and two men coming out of the vehicle, one out of the front passenger door and one out of the back driver’s side door.
Ms Simmons said: “The front passenger is a dark brown-skinned male with no shirt. White material is covering his face, and he’s wearing a black trucker’s hat.
“The male in the back seat is another brown-skinned male. His face is covered with a black cloth and he has black shoes and brown pants.”
She said both the men who emerged from the car were holding objects believed to be knives in their right hand.
At about the same time the men came out of the car, Mr Rowse was seen running towards South Road, with the two men in pursuit.
His pillion passenger also runs in the direction but turns back to grab a helmet before chasing the men.
Ms Simmons said another camera caught Mr Rowse running down a sidewalk on the north side of the petrol station with the attacker, who emerged from the passenger side close behind.
They were followed by the second attacker and the pillion passenger, who appears to throw an object in the direction of the attackers.
Meanwhile, the black car the attackers arrived in pulls out of the station and is seen driving in the same direction as the men.
Shortly after, Mr Rowse and the pillion passenger are seen walking back towards the petrol station.
The black-and-white footage, shot by a licence-plate reading camera, shows Mr Rowse hunched over and holding his side with a trail of fluid appearing on the pavement behind him.
Prosecutors previously told the court that Mr Rowse was outside the petrol station when a car owned by the defendant pulled into the station and he was pursued by two men with knives.
The men allegedly inflicted several stab wounds before escaping the area in the car they arrived in.
Mr Rowse later succumbed to his injuries.
Photographs of the crime scene revealed a trail of blood and what was described as the broken tip of a serrated knife.
The trial continues.
