Man gets suspended sentence for attack at MarketPlace
A Dunkley’s Dairy delivery driver who punched and kicked a colleague has been given a suspended prison sentence in Magistrates’ Court.
David Brangman, 59, admitted causing grievous bodily harm to Edward Tavares when he appeared in court in May.
The court heard that Mr Tavares attended King Edward VII Memorial Hospital with head and facial injuries after the incident, which occurred inside the MarketPlace parking lot on Church Street in February.
Calling the assault an “unprovoked attack of violence” and highlighting that it occurred near the Hamilton Central Bus terminal within an “increased-penalty zone”, prosecutor Carrington Mahoney suggested that Brangman, from Devonshire, serve time in prison for the offence.
Brangman referred to Mr Tavares, who also works for Dunkley’s, as a “problematic person” and told the court that he had a few arguments with him before the incident.
Senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson sentenced Brangman to 15 months behind bars, suspended for that same period, and ordered that he pay $638 in reparations to Mr Tavares.
