Somerset Cup Match coach done for drink-driving
The record-breaking coach of Cup Match champions Somerset Cricket Club has been banned from driving for 18 months after pleading guilty to driving while impaired by alcohol.
Jeff Richardson, 65, from Sandys, admitted the offence when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
The court heard that on December 7, police followed and stopped Richardson, after watching him drive erratically and cross over the centre line on Somerset Road.
Richardson has been coach of Somerset since 2012 and has overseen an unprecedented period of dominance in the Annual Classic for the West End club, which has included six victories — significantly a first by an innings for 34 years in 2018.
Jahni Wilson admitted a similar offence when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court.
The 27-year-old from Smith’s was questioned by police after a two-vehicle collision in Southampton on December 16.
Wilson admitted drinking before getting on his bike and was then taken to Hamilton Police Station.
Magistrate Craig Attridge ordered that his 18-month disqualification run consecutively with a three-month ban for an unrelated matter that was imposed in December.
Both Richardson and Wilson were fined $1,500.
