A Supreme Court judge ordered a social inquiry report on a senior who admitted having unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl ten years ago.

The man, who cannot be named because of a reporting restriction, plead guilty to a single count of the offence, which took place on an unknown date between December 2013 and December 2014.

At the time, the defendant was 53 while the victim, who also cannot be identified for legal reasons, was under the age of 14.

The senior denied a separate charge of intruding on the privacy of a woman.

The Crown indicated that it would not pursue prosecution of that charge at this time given his guilty plea to the other offence.

Elizabeth Christopher, who represented the defendant, told the court: “He never suggested he was innocent at any stage, so I think some examination of his particular circumstances are warranted.”

Puisne Judge Juan Wolffe ordered a social inquiry report and released the defendant on bail until May 1, when the matter is expected to return to the Supreme Court for a sentencing date to be set.
