Man admits to stealing from corrections officer’s car
A man will await sentencing after he admitted breaking into a corrections officer’s car to take a knapsack.
Terry Robinson, 66, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court to stealing a backpack filled with electronics valued at $240.
The court heard that Shannon DeRoza left the bag in his car, which was parked at his Southampton home, overnight on September 14 last year.
Shortly after, Robinson went into the unlocked vehicle and stole the bag, which contained an Apple watch charger, a mobile phone charger and other valuables with an estimated worth of $240.
Robinson appeared in Hamilton Police Station for an unrelated matter two days later, and officers questioned him about the bag.
One officer recognised it as belonging to Mr DeRoza and contacted him about its theft.
Robinson later admitted stealing the bag, telling them “I just needed a bag for my sneakers”.
Senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson heard that Robinson, from Sandys, had a history of theft and was attending Drug Treatment Court.
She ordered a social inquiry report and adjourned his case until April 9.
Robinson was remanded in custody until his court date.
