Man who fled from officers sentenced to prison
A man who escaped from police custody was sentenced to six weeks behind bars.
Schai Govia, 53, admitted the offence, as well as resisting a police officer, when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
The court heard that Govia walked to his Southampton home while police were questioning him in connection with an unrelated matter on May 14.
Govia jumped from the second storey of the residence and fled from police, who arrested him for the offences days later.
Govia told senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson that he only ran away because the officer was aggressive.
Ms Anderson sentenced Govia to six weeks in prison for escaping custody and 30 days for resisting the officer. She ordered that both sentences run concurrently.
