Canadian woman admits drug importation

A Canadian woman admitted in the Supreme Court that she smuggled almost $1.8 million of cannabis into the island this year.

Mara Faiazza, 25, pleaded guilty yesterday to a charge that she illegally imported the drugs on May 19.

After her plea, prosecutors elected not to proceed with related charges of possessing a controlled drug with intent to supply.

Cindy Clarke, the Director of Public Prosecutions, said that while the Crown did not object to bail, they would be seeking an immediate custodial sentence for the offence.

Puisne Judge Juan Wolffe released Faiazza on $100,000 bail with a like surety until July 11, when she is expected to return to the court for sentencing.
