California man charged with conspiring to import guns

An American man was remanded into custody yesterday after he was accused of plotting to smuggle guns, drugs and ammunition into Bermuda.

Jose Humberto Alvarez Tostado Puga, 58, was charged with conspiring with others not before the court to import prohibited weapons, specifically firearms with a barrel length of less than 24 inches, into the island between an unknown date and November 14, 2023.

The Dana Point, California, resident was also charged in Magistrates’ Court with conspiring to import ammunition into the country during the same period without a licence.

Mr Puga was further charged with conspiring with others to import controlled drugs between an unknown date and December 2, 2024.

He was not required to enter a plea to any of the charges as the matter must be heard by the Supreme Court.

Magistrate Craig Attridge remanded Mr Puga into custody until September 3, when the matter is scheduled to be mentioned in the Supreme Court.
