Man who assaulted police to be sentenced in September

A man who assaulted three police officers will be sentenced in Magistrates’ Court in September.

Omar Young, 50, admitted assaulting the officers and violently resisting arrest when he appeared in court yesterday.

The court heard that officers saw Young, from Devonshire, talking incoherently at the Hamilton bus terminal on Saturday.

Young became aggressive when officers approached him, grabbed one by the hair and threw them to the ground.

He assaulted two more officers before being detained, taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and sedated.

Young also pleaded guilty to having drug equipment and displaying “offensive behaviour” during yesterday’s court appearance.

The court heard that Young had been arrested on March 28 after he yelled obscenities at officers, who found drug equipment while searching him at Hamilton Police Station.

Magistrate Maria Sofianos ordered that reports be written for Young, and adjourned the case to September 9 for sentencing.

Ms Sofianos also ordered that Young observe Drug Treatment Court beginning today, and released him on $500 bail until that time.
