Visitor fined for importing cannabis
A visitor who had cannabis in his luggage was fined in Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
Antoine Humphrey, 35, admitted importing the controlled drug to Bermuda when he appeared in court.
The court heard that more than 81 grams of the substance was found in Humphrey’s luggage at LF Wade International Airport when he arrived on the island last Saturday.
Humphrey told police that he purchased the cannabis in New York, where he lives, for $150.
Prosecutor Audley Quallo said the drugs would sell for about $2,400 on Bermuda’s streets if sold by the ounce and $8,100 by the gram.
Humphrey apologised for his actions and told magistrate Maria Sofianos that the “rules are different” in the US.
Ms Sofianos fined Humphrey $3,000 for the offence and ordered him to pay it before leaving Bermuda.
