Visitor fined thousands for drug violations
A US visitor was ordered to pay thousands of dollars in fines before the end of the week after he admitted bringing more than $4,000 worth of drugs into the island.
Robert Alexander, 42, pleaded guilty to the importation of MDMA, the importation of cannabis and the importation of PCP, a hallucinogen known by the street name angel dust.
He also pleaded guilty to possession of each of those drugs.
The court heard that Alexander was aboard a Carnival Cruise ship from New York that landed in Dockyard last Thursday.
He went through a compliance check with Customs officers as he left the boat and denied having any drugs on him when questioned.
A Customs officer told Alexander to empty his pockets, but he hesitated before co-operating.
The officer noticed that there was still an item in his coin pocket and instructed Alexander to remove it.
He pulled out a small bag filled with plantlike material, which he later admitted was cannabis.
Customs officers demanded he further empty his pockets, which led to Alexander taking out a blue pill from his coin pocket and slipping it into his mouth.
He refused to spit the pill out when pressed by officers and attempted to slip the bag of plant matter back into his pocket.
Alexander eventually gave up both items and officers searched him, which turned up a third item — a small vial of fluid wrapped in a paper napkin.
Officers searched his cabin, where they found another bag of plantlike matter, as well as a bag of blue crystalline matter and a bag of white powder.
The items were seized and tested, which revealed them to be 8.85g of cannabis, 21 and a half tablets of MDMA and mixed quantities of PCP.
Shaunté Simons-Fox, for the Crown, said that the amount of drugs was enough to warrant an intent to supply, but added that it all appeared to be for personal use.
She added that the drugs would have had a combined street value of about $4,450 and that Alexander should be made to pay the same amount.
Magistrate Tyrone Chin fined Alexander a total of $4,450 and gave him until the end of the week to pay the fines.
He also remanded Alexander in custody until the amount was paid.
