Impaired driver banned from the road

Magistrates' Court

A Devonshire man seen by police driving erratically on a Friday night has been banned from the road.

Carlos Tavares-Pereira, 38, pleaded guilty yesterday in Magistrates’ Court to a single count of riding a motorcycle while impaired, in connection with an incident in Hamilton Parish on May 31.

The court heard that at about 9.50pm, officers were on mobile patrol on North Shore Road when they saw Tavares-Pereira pull out of the eastern entrance to Radnor Road and make a left turn.

As the officers looked on, the rider swerved over the centre line and appeared to have difficulty negotiating corners.

The officers pulled Tavares-Pereira over near the western entrance to Radnor Road.

While they said the defendant had difficulty speaking English, he admitted to the officers that he had drunk two beers.

He was arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station, where a breath test revealed he had 116mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood — almost 50 per cent more than the legal limit of 80mg.

Magistrate Tyrone Chin fined Tavares-Pereira $1,500 and banned him from driving all vehicles for 18 months.
