Woman admits theft of $90 in toiletries

A woman who admitted stealing $91 of toiletries from a store is to be sentenced next month.

Barbara Ann Bean, 62, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court to the theft, which included lotion and body wash.

The court heard that Bean, from Devonshire, visited Clarendon Pharmacy on Victoria Street with a brown duffel bag on December 29 last year.

The assistant manager saw her fidgeting with her bag while in the store, before going to the cashier, buying some items and then leaving.

The manager reviewed the CCTV footage afterwards and saw Bean put several items in her bag — including body wash, lotions and ankle tights — without paying for them.

The manager and pharmacist visited Bean at her place of business and informed her of what they saw.

Bean initially denied the theft and said: “I don’t know what you’re talking about, what items?”

When they told her that they had captured her on camera, she then asked how much they were worth and offered to pay for the items.

Bean returned to the pharmacy with some of the stolen items and paid for them, but was informed in March that she would be charged.

Senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson ordered a social inquiry report and a drug assessment for Bean and adjourned the case until November 14 for sentencing.

She released her on $2,000 bail.
