Defendant remanded after breaking library windows

Magistrates' Court

A 21-year-old was remanded into custody this week after admitting smashing windows at the Bermuda National Library.

Ammar Shakir, from Paget, pleaded guilty on Monday to a charge of causing wilful damage in connection to the incident on September 24.

Magistrates’ Court heard that between 11.16pm and 11.19pm that day, Shakir was seen on CCTV cameras pacing back and forth outside the library “visibly irate” before punching the windows.

The incident was reported the following day to police, who found a fist-sized hole in one of the windows, while the second window had significant cracks.

Shakir was later arrested at Queen Elizabeth II Park and, when interviewed by police, admitted striking the glass while “mad and irritated”.

The court heard that last year Shakir pleaded guilty to possessing a bladed article and drug equipment in connection to one incident and to the theft of food in connection to another.

Social inquiry reports were ordered in both cases, but Shakir failed to appear after pleading guilty.

Magistrate Maria Sofianos said that in the circumstances she would remand Shakir into custody so that the reports could be carried out and the underlying issues behind the offences be identified.

The matter was adjourned until December 19 for sentencing.
