Brooklyn man in court on cannabis smuggling charge

A United States national has been remanded in custody after being accused of importing more than six kilograms of cannabis.

Cadell Smith, 25, was charged in Magistrates’ Court with importing cannabis into Bermuda and possession of the drug with intent to supply.

The offences were alleged to have happened on November 7 in St George’s.

Mr Smith, from Brooklyn, New York, was not required to enter a plea as the matter must be heard in the Supreme Court.

Carrington Mahoney, for the Crown, said that 6,306g of cannabis were alleged to have been discovered, but more “plantlike materials” were still being analysed.

Senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson referred the case to the Supreme Court January arraignments session and remanded Mr Smith in custody.
