A man who assaulted three police officers has been sentenced to 21 months behind bars.

Omar Young, 50, admitted causing one officer bodily harm, assaulting two others, violently resisting arrest, having drug equipment and displaying “offensive behaviour” when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court in July.

Young, from Devonshire, reappeared in court on Wednesday for sentencing.

The court heard that Young was found with the drug equipment after he yelled obscenities at police on March 28 and grabbed an officer by their hair near the Hamilton bus terminal on July 20.

Young assaulted the other officers before being taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and sedated, also on July 20.

Young was initially sent to Drug Treatment Court, but was found unsuitable for the programme and has been in custody since September.

Senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson sentenced Young to time already served behind bars for the offensive behaviour and three months in prison for having the drug equipment, to run concurrently.

These sentences will be consecutive to an 18-month prison term for causing the officer bodily harm, which will run concurrent to eight months behind bars for all other offences.

Ms Anderson ordered that Young be considered for the Right Living House treatment programme, offered by the Department of Corrections, while in prison.
