Abuse and theft charges dropped

Prosecutors dropped charges against a man accused of abusing and stealing from a senior citizen on Monday.

Joseph DeSilva, 56, was charged in Magistrates’ Court in November with abusing Rose Marie DeSilva through financial exploitation and stealing $30,875 from her.

Mr DeSilva, from Warwick, was alleged to have committed the offences between February and December 2023, and chose to have the case heard in the Supreme Court.

However, the Crown entered a nolle prosequi, a request for an indefinite adjournment, in Magistrates’ Court.

Adjournments through a nolle prosequi can be upheld for a year before a case is dismissed.
