Rena Lalgie, the Governor, has announced a new appointment to Bermuda’s Court of Appeal.

Sir Gary Hickinbottom assumes the role of Acting Justice of Appeal once departing judge Geoffrey Bell has completed his term of office.

A statement from Government House said Sir Gary would be appointed for the March 2025 session of the Court of Appeal

Ms Lalgie said: “Sir Gary brings to the Court of Appeal a wealth of valuable knowledge and insight from his 20-plus years of experience as a circuit judge, High Court judge and Court of Appeal judge both within England and Wales and in Commonwealth jurisdictions, as well as his experience as an arbitrator and assessor.”

Sir Gary was enrolled as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales in 1981.

He became a recorder in 1994 and a circuit judge in 2001.

He was appointed a High Court judge in January 2009 and was appointed a Lord Justice of Appeal in 2017 until his retirement in 2021.

Sir Gary’s appointment comes after the recommendation of the Judicial and Legal Services Committee.
