Teenager given conditional discharge for wounding

A teenager who injured a woman with a machete was given a conditional discharge in Magistrates’ Court.

Nyaunjae Crockwell, 19, admitted wounding and acting threateningly towards Kylah Burch when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court in December.

Crockwell, from Warwick, reappeared in court yesterday for sentencing.

The court heard that on May 31 Crockwell placed the machete to Ms Burch’s neck and asked if she “wanted to die”.

Ms Burch suffered wounds to her stomach and elbow as she pushed Crockwell and the weapon away from her, and had to get stitches at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

Prosecutor Karim Nelson requested that Crockwell, who has been in custody for more than four months, be sentenced to a two-year conditional discharge for the offence, while Crockwell’s lawyer, Bruce Swan, requested the discharge be for 18 months.

Crockwell apologised to the court for his actions and highlighted his plan to earn a GED from the Bermuda College.

Magistrate Auralee Cassidy granted Crockwell an 18-month conditional discharge for the offence.

Conditions included abstaining from alcohol or drugs, attending probation review court and not leaving the island without permission.
