Senior more than double the legal alcohol limit while driving
A senior who admitted driving while being more than twice the legal blood-alcohol limit has been banned from the road for 18 months.
Gordon-Stewart Wilkinson, 77, pleaded guilty to drink-driving in Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
The court heard that Wilkinson was stopped at a roadside sobriety checkpoint on Crow Lane in Pembroke.
When questioned by police at the checkpoint, he admitted that he had “three vodka-based drinks” before driving.
Wilkinson failed a roadside sobriety test and, as a result, was arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station.
Wilkinson gave another sample of breath for analysis, which showed that he had 172.4 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80mg/100ml.
The incident happened on December 28 last year.
Wilkinson, from Hamilton Parish, apologised to the court and explained that he had been coming from a funeral.
He added that drinking for him was “not a habit”.
Senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson fined Wilkinson $1,500 on top of his 18-month road ban.
