Man faces sentencing for sexual, traffic offences
A man could face prison time for a sexual and a traffic offence.
Rico Pitcher, 29, admitted having unlawful carnal knowledge of a minor and causing a woman grievous bodily harm through careless driving when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court at earlier hearings.
The court heard yesterday that Pitcher and the teenager had intercourse between 2018 and 2019.
This occurred when the victim, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was between 14 and 16 years old while Pitcher, from St George’s, was between 22 and 24.
Prosecutor Audley Quallo said Pitcher showed little responsibility for the offence and called the victim “sexually promiscuous” in a social inquiry report.
The court also heard that Pitcher struck and injured motorist Nailah Jawaheer while driving a car along North Shore Road on October 16, 2021.
Ms Jawaheer sustained several injuries and needed a partial foot amputation after the collision.
It was suggested that Pitcher was travelling at almost 97km/h, more than double the speed limit, when the incident occurred.
He was also charged with driving while impaired by alcohol, refusing to take a blood test and driving an unlicensed and uninsured vehicle in the same incident, but those charges were dropped.
Mr Quallo suggested that Pitcher spend between 18 and 27 months behind bars for both offences.
Susan Mulligan, Pitcher’s lawyer, said there was no evidence that her client coerced or “groomed” the teenager into having intercourse with him.
She added that Pitcher accidentally crossed into Ms Jawaheer’s lane of traffic after someone smashed his car windshield, and requested that he be given a suspended prison sentence for both offences.
Magistrate Tyrone Chin ordered the hearing to continue on Wednesday and extended Pitcher’s bail until that time.
